9.28 to 10.1 | Design Makes Things Better Photo Contest

Design is a very vital presence in everyday life. But these days, life can get so hectic that design is easily overshadowed by the familiar daily grind.

During Wichita Design Week, AIGA wants to encourage you to take a moment to seek out design and appreciate the beauty and joy it provides. Maybe it’s something you take for granted – like the ornate, carefully crafted detail on that building you pass every day. Or perhaps it’s something you never thought about as design at all – like the unmistakable imprint on that Oreo cookie you dunked for breakfast. Regardless of the medium or execution, great design is everywhere, just waiting to be discovered. And part of the fun is recognizing just how much design DOES make things better! (Come on – would that Oreo taste half as good as a flat cookie?!)

From now until October 1st share your great design discoveries on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, using the hashtag #ICTDesignWeekContest. Not only are you sharing the design love, but you will be entered to win great prizes!

Winners will be announced at the official Design Week Closing Party on Friday, October 2nd at The Monarch. $10 gift cards to various local establishments will be awarded to each winning photo entry in the following categories: Architecture, Landscape Design, Interior Design, Signage, Handmade, Unexpected.

A $50 gift card will be awarded to the entry deemed Best in Show! *

So join in the fun and start sharing your pictures now to show the world how Design Makes Things Better!

*Winners will be determined by the AIGA Design Week Committee. Likes/Shares/Retweets will be taken into consideration. Contest entry ends October 1 at noon CST.

9.28, 6:30 pm | Design at Scale: Ten to Ten Million Users

At IBM, one of the world’s largest and most successful companies, we’re on a mission to bring human-centered design to our thousands of product experiences. To accomplish this goal, we’ve launched a new design center in Austin, Texas, where designers, engineers, and product managers collaborate to change our approach to product design and to impact humanity in ways that matter and endure.

Most creative professionals are familiar with commonly-practiced approaches to design thinking — but how does design thinking succeed at scale? Our products have tens of millions of users and affect billions of lives, so we’ve developed our own unique approach. We’re practicing design with a global scope and a level of complexity that has never been done before.

We don’t just make great products at IBM. We painstakingly craft experiences that delight our users and shape the future.

Seth Johnson is design advocate with IBM Design's Education and Activation Team, creating and delivering active learning experiences to IBMers during a new era of design-led innovation within one of the world's largest technology companies. Prior to IBM, he founded a Minneapolis-based consultancy focused on improving the patient product experience for pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers. Seth speaks frequently at universities and design organizations around the nation, has taught at colleges in Los Angeles and Minneapolis, and is president emeritus of the Minnesota chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design.
